Symptoms:
  • Receiving error messages from programs on your computer saying that you do not have an Internet connection or that your computer is offline

Solution:

1. Ensure that your modem and router are properly connected

  • Check that you have an Internet source connected to your modem (i.e. a cable line connected to your modem) and that your modem is powered on
  • Check that your modem is connected to your router and that your router is powered on (if you have one). An Ethernet cable should be placed from the cable modem to the input “Ethernet” or “internet”

2. Conduct a power cycle

  • Disconnect the power from your modem and router, and shut your computer off
  • Wait for 30 seconds
  • Reconnect the power to the modem first and wait for the modem to fully boot (about 30-60 seconds
  • Next, reconnect the power to the router and wait for the router to fully boot (about 30-60 seconds)
  • Finally, turn on your computer

3. Ensure that your computer is set to connect to the correct network if you are using a wireless Wi-Fi connection.  (If you are using a wired Ethernet connection, your system will automatically connect). You may be required to re-enter the network password.

  • On Windows, go to Control Panel > Network & Internet > Connect to a network.  Ensure that Wi-Fi is turned on and select a network from the list
  • On Mac, go to System Preferences > Network.  Ensure that Wi-Fi is turned on and then select a network from the drop down list under Network Name

If the errors persist, a problem may exist in your ISP (Internet Service Provider), modem, router, or the Wi-Fi/Ethernet card in your computer.
